Today (January 19th) is widely considered the most depressing day the year. As we patiently await the first pay cheque of 2015 amidst extreme weather, lack of daylight and a realisation that most of our resolutions for the year have already fallen by the wayside (oh, and it’s Monday!), it’s easy to nose dive into depression. Yet Blue Monday, as it has come to be known, needn’t be all doom and gloom. As always, it’s a matter of perspective.

Here are 3 ways to make the most of today…

  1. Get Outside – since the winter solstice on December 21st, the days are officially getting longer! Get outside during daylight hours and enjoy a Vitamin D boost. A great depression fighter and immune health booster.
  2. Have a Dream – As our US friends celebrate the birth of civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Martin Luther King Jr, why not get to work on your own dream? Who says January 1st is the only day to affect change? With the return to work, and normality once again prevailing, get to work on achievable and inspiring goals for 2015 without being overly influenced by 2014’s challenges!
  3. Book a holiday – Many travel companies offer discounts and special offers in January for holidays throughout the year. Take advantage and send yourself somewhere you have always wanted to go? One Dutch study found that the anticipation of a holiday boosted happiness for up to 8 weeks! That should take us happily into the summer count down…

Happiness is a choice. Choose to see the silver lining in Blue Monday’s cloud and help those around you do the same. When we help others, we feel good and positive emotions are contagious!
